R&D Engineer - Laser and Optical Systems

Photonics

Ref: 1417Thursday 25 April 2024

Salary to £55,000

Enigma People Solutions is working with our client Skylark Lasers to recruit a highly motivated R&D  Engineer to join their R&D innovation team.  You will be joining a growing company that is highly collaborative and proud to be involved in a range of interesting new development projects.

Specialising in the development and production of CW single frequency DPSS lasers Skylark Lasers’ proprietary BRaMMS Technology® platform delivers outstanding spectral performance with some of the highest output powers in the market.

Working in a creative and innovative environment, you will face various challenges on a day-to-day basis with a focus on creating truly unique laser systems with a particular interest in quantum technology applications.

Quantum Technologies hold great promise to bring a step-change improvement to a diverse range of high-impact applications, such as ultra-stable clocks for financial transaction time stamping and satellite-free navigation, medical imaging, oil and gas prospecting, and ultra-secure communications. Whilst the scientific principles upon which these technologies rely are now largely proven, the subsystems (in particular, laser systems) upon which they depend are excessively large, expensive, and power-hungry.

The role:

On a day-to-day basis you will be tasked with generating design packages analysing new ideas relevant to complex optical systems, including athermal imaging systems, laser product design and non-linear optics. You will part of an R&D team focusing on new research and generating and testing new ideas in the lab and through simulation.

Essential:

Practical experience and understanding of laser alignment
Experience with designing and modelling of complex optical systems, preferably using OpticStudio.
Excellent analytical skills with an eye for detail and accuracy
Ability to interpret detailed technical information and convey to colleagues and stakeholders
Ability to multitask
Work well within a team and interfacing with customers
Degree in STEM subject
Eligibility to work full-time in the UK

Desirable:
PhD or MSc in relevant field in Physics or Engineering
Experience in 3D design software packages: Solidworks, SolidEdge etc.
Software experience in Python, C++, OpticStudio, COMSOL
