Enigma People Solutions is recruiting a Laser Development Engineering Manager for a global leader in the manufacture of laser products based in Glasgow, Scotland (relocation assistance available).

 

About the role

Reporting into R&D this role is for an Engineering Manager to co-ordinate and run laser development projects from concept through the full manufacturing release cycle. This opening comes at a time of exciting growth for the company with an opportunity to join a multidiscipline engineering team and shape the next generation of cutting edge laser products. You will directly manage a team of engineers and liaise with other functional groups within the wider engineering team to define and deliver products that meet  stringent cost, performance and reliability targets that will delight customers.

Our client develops laser systems that help people and are used in a wide variety of markets including renewable energy, microelectronics, fundamental research, life sciences and medicine. Responsibilities will include:

  • Full ownership of product developments from concept to production release
  • Coordination and completion of technical feasibility studies
  • Management of project and product costs
  • Management of projects as defined in technology and product roadmaps
  • Defining the best technical solutions to meet market requirements based on state of the art technology and techniques
  • Troubleshooting and root cause failure analysis for prototype units through the development process
  • Contributing to troubleshooting and coordinating corrective actions for manufacturing or field issues on production released systems.
  • Establishing and nurturing relationships with key personal at other Coherent sites worldwide, becoming a recognized expert in your area of work
  • Providing detailed and technically thorough reports to an engineering review team
  • Owning the project documentation and providing this to the project review team
  • Manage and mentor staff reporting directly to you, developing junior engineers and challenging the more experienced members of your team
  • Traveling to other Coherent facilities, suppliers, customers, and trade shows
  • Generation of IP

Education and Experience:

You will have:

  • PhD or equivalent, in laser development or relevant area of photonics
  • Significant demonstrable experience in the development of laser products in an industrial environment including a full laser development product release from concept to manufacturing.
  • In depth understanding of the principles of optics and lasers including ultrashort laser pulses, mode-locking techniques, UV generation, fiber laser systems, solid state laser oscillators and amplifiers.

Essential Skills

  • General understanding of electronics and control systems
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks and manage priorities.
  • Awareness of current laser research and new developments in the field
  • Detail-oriented, able to take general instructions and seek out all the elements needed to complete the assigned task.
  • Ability to drive a project within the organization

Preferred Additional Skills

  • Experienced in the use of optical modelling software packages.
  • Experience in use of Python programming language for modeling and data analysis
  • Previous experience managing laser development projects.
  • Experience of people management in an R+D environment
