Architecture Engineer - London | Digital Photonics / Deep Tech Start-Up | Architecture & RTL

Digital Design

Ref: 1443Monday 5 October 2026

Salary £75,000 to £100,000 + equity depending in line with seniority and experience.

Enigma People Solutions has been exclusively retained to support an ambitious VC-backed deep-tech start-up developing a fundamentally different approach to computing.

This is an opportunity to help define the architecture of a new generation of computers using light to overcome the limitations of conventional digital electronics. Our client is working at the intersection of digital computing, photonics and semiconductor technology, developing a novel architecture designed to push beyond the traditional limits of Moore's Law. The technology uses optical logic to create new possibilities for high-performance computing. They now need an engineer who wants to help make that architecture real.

As an Architecture Engineer, you’ll work at the heart of the technology, contributing to the design, implementation and validation of the company’s novel computing architecture.

You’ll be able to move from: Architecture → Simulation → RTL → FPGA → Reality

You’ll see your ideas tested rather than simply documented.

Own the implementation - You’ll contribute directly to RTL design and verification using Verilog, helping turn architectural concepts into functioning digital systems. You’ll also work with FPGA prototypes and physical implementation and verification tools as the technology develops.

Work at the frontier of computing - Instead of simply making conventional electronics faster, the company is exploring what becomes possible when computation itself is performed using light.

Join at the right moment - This is an early-stage, VC-backed deep-tech business where your contribution can have a disproportionate impact. You’ll join while the architecture is still being developed, giving you genuine influence over both the technology and engineering culture.

What we’re looking for - We’re looking for engineers with strong experience in RTL design using Verilog, combined with an understanding of computer architecture.

You might come from:

  • Digital design / RTL engineering
  • Computer architecture
  • FPGA development
  • ASIC / semiconductor design
  • Hardware acceleration
  • Digital signal processing
  • Photonics / optical computing
  • Processor or accelerator architecture

Experience with FPGA prototyping, Python, C++, physical implementation or verification tools would also be valuable.

Most importantly, we're looking for someone who is curious, who enjoys questioning established approaches and solving problems where there isn't an obvious answer.
You don't necessarily need to have worked in photonics before.
You need to be excited by the possibility of rethinking computing from first principles.
“What if the next generation of computers isn't built around the same architecture?”
If you want to work on technology that could fundamentally change how computing is designed and have genuine influence over the architecture we'd like to hear from you.
